The anvil is a symbol of a placeholder. The placeholder where a skilled blacksmith carefully crafts and forges an otherwise discardable piece of metal into a tool that can have a true impact. A sword, for instance, must be rid of all of its impurities so that it’s not too brittle to be wielded in battle. This process requires careful and strategic hammering and though the process can be quite painful, it’s refining.
